When does Canvas Update?

Modified on Thu, 5 Nov at 5:34 PM

Canvas releases updates and deploys bug fixes monthly. The schedule may change temporarily due to holiday schedules and disruptions. For the most up-to-date information about upcoming Canvas updates, see the Instructure Community Release Schedule Guide.

There are three kinds of Canvas updates that happen on their own schedules:

Release: Third Saturday of the month

Larger updates that can affect the way Canvas looks and works. This is a structured rollout where new features, major updates, or functional changes are officially made live and visible to teachers, students, or administrators.

Deploy: Second and fourth Wednesday of the month

These are changes in the background of Canvas that most users would not notice. Technical code updates focused on bug fixes, performance improvements, security patches, and background preparation for upcoming features.

Maintenance: 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month from 12:05am to 2:05am

As needed, infrastructure upgrades, database maintenance, or emergency fixes. Potential brief downtime or read-only access (scheduled during low-traffic hours).

Other Canvas updates:

  • Course Enrollments & Data Syncs: Currently, data syncs from Colleague into Canvas twice per day. This includes building new user accounts in Canvas, enrollment for Students and Teachers, new course builds, and changes such as course drops or course cancellations. Updates occur as 10am and 4pm and capture any changes that have been added to Colleague prior to 9am and 3pm respectively.
  • Canvas Data: Data that comes from Canvas Data2 into some reports, such as Intelliboard recieve new data every 4 hours. Be aware that on some reports you view, you may not see data for the past 4 hours.
