Quizzes
Quizzes imported from Moodle automatically populate as Canvas practice quizzes. Therefore, they will not appear on your Assignment Index Page, only your Quizzes Index Page.
If you wish your quizzes to be graded and appear in the gradebook, for each quiz:
- Click on the quiz name
- Click on the edit button located in the right-hand side of the quiz name
- From the details tab, scroll down beneath the quiz instructions to see the dropdown menu for quiz type. You will see that your quiz has been automatically selected as a practice quiz.
- Click on the dropdown menu to select Graded Quiz.
- Save changes
Your quiz will now appear on your Assignments Index page.
“Imported Assignments” Assignment Group
From your Assignments Index Page, you may see an additional assignment group labeled “Imported Assignments.” This can happen if you import Moodle content to Canvas and partial Canvas imports from one Canvas course to another, including shared content from other instructors also using Canvas.
If you notice this extra assignment group, it can be a quick fix. From your Assignments Index Page:
- Locate the "Imported Assignments" assignment group. If all of the individual assignments within that assignment group belong in a different assignment group
- Select the three-dot options menu located next to the "Imported Assignments" assignment group name
- Select the Move Contents option from the drop-down menu. A block drawer will appear.
- Choose from the drop-down menu which assignment group your individual assignments should belong to and decide if the assignments should be placed at the top or the bottom of the assignment group.
- Click the blue Move button to save your changes
- You should delete the extra assignment group by, once again, selecting the three-dot option menu next to the assignment group name and selecting the Delete option from the drop-down menu
- If the individual assignments within the assignment group belong to a variety of assignment groups
- Move individual assignments one at a time by selecting the handle and dragging the assignment to its appropriate group.
- Once all of the individual assignments are within their appropriate groups, delete the extra assignment group by selecting the three-dot option menu next to the assignment group name and selecting the Delete option from the drop-down menu
Gradebook Zeros before Assignment is Due
Whenever you complete an import, check your gradebook. You may see students getting zeros automatically. This is because the imported activities have a past due date from the previous course. This can be avoided by bulk editing or removing dates during the import process. If someone forgets to do this the zeros can be fixed. To remove the zeros from your gradebook:
- Navigate to the gradebook in your Canvas course.
- Find the column(s) that have the incorrect zero grades.
- Hover over the top of the column and click the "Options" icon (three vertical dots).
- Select "Set Default Grade"
- In the pop-up window, leave the grade field empty.
- Check the "Overwrite already-entered grades" box.
- Click "Set Default Grade" to save your changes.
- Repeat this process for every column that has incorrect zeros.
LTI/Third-Party Links
All third-party links or LTI connections will need to be set up in Canvas, these connections will not import from Moodle. You may also see these third-party tools called Apps in Canvas. See our guide on Canvas External Tools to see what tools are available now and where to find them in Canvas.
Common LTI Troubleshooting Tips
- Yuja Links: It’s recommended to relink all YuJa quizzes. Check all your YuJa video links to make sure they go to the correct video. If the link is broken, click the + symbol at the top of any module, choose External Tool, and then Yuja to find your video to add the video/link to your Canvas course.
- Textbook/Courseware Publishers: Links to publisher materials like Pearson, McGraw-Hill, and Cengage will need to be set up in Canvas. Please refer to your textbook publisher's resources to see how these tools work in Canvas.
- Don’t see the tool you need? Some connections can only be on one of our sites at one time, and it is currently in use on our Moodle site. If you do not see a tool in Canvas that you need, let us know. We may be transitioning some tools between the Spring and Summer terms, during the break between courses. Reach out to canvas@davidsondavie.edu for more information.
Files
Some instructors may find extra images and files that came over during import from Moodle under the files tab in Canvas. These files may have been attached to forums or student posts that weren’t brought over, but for some reason the files were. These items are brought over in “published” status. It is recommended that everyone check your file tab, and should you find extra images and files, keep the file link hidden in navigation until you’ve deleted the unwanted items to keep from causing confusion.
