Introduction

When you perform an import of your course, it is always important to validate your links, your due dates, and your gradebook.  With partial imports, you may notice a few hiccups in your gradebook.  Potential issues include

  • An extra assignment group labeled "Imported Assignments"
  • Students getting zeros automatically on assignments

Removing Extra Assignment Groups and Moving Individual Assignments

If you notice this extra assignment group, it can be a quick fix. From your Assignment Index Page:

  1. Locate the "Imported Assignments" assignment group. If all of the individual assignments within that assignment group belong in a different assignment group
    1. Select the three-dot options menu located next to the "Imported Assignments" assignment group name
    2. Select the Move Contents option from the drop-down menu.  A block drawer will appear.
    3. Choose from the drop-down menu which assignment group your individual assignments should belong to and decide if the assignments should be placed at the top or the bottom of the assignment group.
    4. Click the blue Move button to save your changes
    5. You should delete the extra assignment group by, once again, selecting the three-dot option menu next to the assignment group name and selecting the Delete option from the drop-down menu
  2. If the individual assignments within the assignment group belong to a variety of assignment groups
    1. Move individual assignments one at a time by selecting the handle and dragging the assignment to its appropriate group.
    2. Once all of the individual assignments are within their appropriate groups, delete the extra assignment group by selecting the three-dot option menu next to the assignment group name and selecting the Delete option from the drop-down menu

Removing Automatic Zeros

  1. Navigate to the Grades tab in your Canvas course.
  2. Find the column(s) that have the incorrect zero grades.
  3. Hover over the top of the column and click the three-dot Options icon
  4. Select Set Default Grade
  5. In the pop-up window, leave the grade field empty.
  6. Check the Overwrite already-entered grades box.
  7. Click Set Default Grade to save your changes.
  8. Repeat this process for every column that has incorrect zeros.

You can avoid this issue by adjusting your settings before importing a new course.

  1. Turn off the automatically apply grade for missing submissions setting before you import course content.
  2. Adjust the due dates during the import process to match the upcoming term.
  3. Turn the automatically apply grade for missing submissions setting back on after the course import is complete and the due dates have been set.
