TABLE OF CONTENTS


With a YuJa account, you can edit and caption videos that you've recorded or uploaded. To make sure that you can see all of the tools talked about below, turn on Advanced Mode using the toggle that you'll find between the video and the timeline toward the right side of the screen. 


Overview

  • Go to your YuJa account and locate the video you want to edit.

  • Hover your mouse over the video and click on “Edit” in the menu that appears.

  • The editing screen will open in a new window.The editing screen with numbers that correspond to the text explanations below the image.

  1. Save - When you are satisfied with your edits, you can save by clicking the word “Save” at the top of the screen. You will have the option to overwrite the original video or save the edited version separately.

  2. Discard - If you change your mind about the edits, you can discard them by clicking “Discard” at the top of the screen.

  3. Actions - Clicking on "Actions" will open a list of editing actions you've performed on the video during this session.

  4. Captions - Select the Closed Caption (CC) icon to edit captions for accuracy. For specific directions on editing your captions, see our tutorial on Editing Captions in YuJa. Accessibility note: YuJa utilizes machine captioning so the captions may not be completely accurate. Take the time to edit them so that all students receive an equitable experience.

  5. Index - Add segments to your video to make it easier for students to navigate.

  6. Text Overlay - You can add a text overlay anywhere in your video to highlight points. Accessibility note: If you use this feature, the information also needs to be included verbally so that all students have equitable access to any meaningful information in the video.
  7. Slides Override - You can insert a slide image over a video if you need to update a visual. This overlays the visual part of the video but not the audio. Accessibility note: If you use this feature, the information conveyed by the image also needs to be included verbally so that all students have equitable access to any meaningful information in the video.

  8. Video Insert or Override - You can insert another video into the current video you're editing or override a section of the video.

  9. Blur - Blur a section of the screen to hide sensitive information

  10. Virtual Background - You can add a virtual background to videos even after filming.

  11. Audio - You can change the audio volume to the whole video or to segments of the video. 

  12. Light Mode - You can toggle between light and dark mode to suit your preference.


Cut/Trim 

You can cut out mistakes in your video or trim blank space at the beginning or end of your video using the cutting tool.

  1. Drag the blue progress bar to the time where you’d like to start the cut.

  2. Click on the cutting tool (scissors icon).

  1. Place your mouse pointer where you want to cut. The area will become gray.

  1. Click to set the area of the cut.

  2. You can drag the gray area to change the area of the cut or resize the cut. 

  3. Double click the gray area to bring up a box that allows you to enter specific timestamps for your cut.

  4. To delete the cut, click the X that appears in the top right corner of the box when you hover over it.


Text Overlay

  1. Drag the blue progress bar to the place on your timeline where you want the overlay.

  2. Select the text overlay button in the column on the left side of the screen. 

  1. In the box that opens, type your text, set the font size, and set the duration.

  1. Once you click “Apply”, you will see the text on the video and a box appears on your editing timeline to represent the overlay.

  1. You can double click on the box to reopen the dialog box and make changes to font size, duration, and wording.

  2. The text will appear in the top left corner of your video. You can click and drag the text on the video to move it to a different place on the screen. Hovering over the text will bring up the word "Settings". You can click on Settings to make changes.


Image or Slide Override

You can add an image or slide that will override your video content (but not the audio) for a selected amount of time.

  1. Drag the blue progress bar to the place in the video where you would like to insert an image or slide.

  2. Select the image overlay icon from the column on the left side of the editing screen. 

  1. In the box that opens, use “Upload Media” to open your files and choose the image you want to use or drop your file into the box.

  1. Once you’ve selected a file, choose which video stream you want to overlay if you have multiple video streams (such as a screen recording and a webcam recording) and choose a duration length.

  1. Click Apply.

  2. You will see a new box on your timeline with the name of your media. You can click on this box to change the settings for this edit.

Video Insert/Overlay

  1. Drag the blue progress bar to the point at which you want to insert a video.

  2. Select the Insert Video icon from the column on the left side of the editing screen.

  1. From the box that opens, choose the video you want to add or choose “Upload Media” from the top of the box to upload a new video. You can type the name of the video into the search box to find it quickly.

  1. After selecting a video to insert, you have 4 choices for how the video will be inserted. Choose the desired option from the drop-down menu and choose which video stream (i.e. webcam or screen recording) should be affected if you have multiple video streams. 


The choices available from the drop-down menu: current time-override, current time - insert, at beginning, or at end.


  1. Current Time - Override: Insert the new video at the current time and override the existing video. If you use this option, the selected segment of the original video will be overwritten by the new one. This is a good option if you are updating an old video.  

  2. Current Time - Insert: Insert the new video at the current time and append it to the existing video. If you use this option, the original video will stop and the new video will play followed by the rest of the original video. This is a good option if you want to insert a clip that you refer to later in the video.

  3. At Beginning: Insert the new video at the beginning and append it to the existing video. The original video will play after the new video.

  4. At End: Insert the new video at the end and append it to the existing video. The new video will play after the original video.

Blur

  1. Select the Blur icon from the column on the left of the editing screen.

  1. In the box that opens, select the video stream to be affected if you have multiple video streams (i.e. webcam and screen recording) and the duration of time for the effect. You can check the box if you want the entire screen to be blurred or blacked out for the specified time.

  1. Select “Apply”.

  2. You’ll see a small gray box in the top left corner of the video. You can click and drag the box to where you want it to be and drag from the corner to resize the box.A screenshot from a video showing the gray box representing a blur.

  1. After saving your changes, the gray box will be replaced with a blurred region.


Audio Adjustments

  1. Select the “Audio” icon from the column on the left of the editing screen.

  1.  In the box that opens,

    1. Enter the start time in seconds for where the adjustment should begin. This can be adjusted to the millisecond.

    2. Enter how many seconds the adjustment should last. This can also be done to the millisecond.

    3. Enter the adjustment to be made to the volume level. Use a minus to indicate the volume should decrease.

  1. Select “Apply”.

  2. You can change the adjustment section by clicking and dragging it along the timeline or by dragging the end to lengthen it. You can also use your mouse to drag the volume level (green bar) up or down.
