Canvas Notebook (Instructor Guide)

Canvas has a built-in Notebook for students.  This feature allows students to keep track of important and unclear information written within a Canvas Page.  Students can highlight and mark sentences as important or unclear and include optional notes.

While you as an instructor do not have access to create your own notebook, you can if you operate in your Test Student view.  This will allow you to play with the features and even create models for your students.  

Notes saved in the Notebook are for the student and cannot be submitted as an assignment directly.  However, you may wish to think a little outside the box with how you can encourage students to use this feature for your course.  To help you get started, here are templates for three different ways you can incorporate the Canvas Notebook into a learning opportunity. 

You will find each template on a different Google Doc tab, and all are TILT-ed.  Each template includes instructions and optional suggestions for instructors as well as UDL principles to encourage active learning and provide flexibility for different course modalities.  At a glance, the templates include
