Introduction

Copyleaks is a platform that helps detect possible plagiarism in student work. It is fully integrated with Canvas and can be used with assignments. 


Disclaimer: Copyleaks also has AI Detection.  While it claims to have 99% accuracy, we have seen it deliver false positives and false negatives.  You should not use the Copyleaks AI Detection tool as the only means to verify if a student has used AI.


Add Copyleaks to an Assignment

  1. Edit the assignment for which you want to add Copyleaks
  2. Select Online from the Submission Type dropdown menu and select either Text Entry or File Uploads (or allow both) for your online entry options. A new assignment setting for Plagiarism Review will now be available. 
  3. Select Copyleaks Plagiarism Checker from the dropdown menu. 
  4. Click on additional, optional settings
    1. AI Content Detection: the pre-setting is to have this off.  If you would like this on, please read the disclaimer at the beginning of this tutorial.
    2. Advanced Settings: the advanced settings hyperlink will open in a new tab for you to adjust your scan settings (for more details, see below). 
  5. Choose whether you want students to be able to access the reports from the "Show Report to Students" dropdown menu
  6. Finish editing your assignment and save.


Adjust the Scan Settings

Copyleaks as preset scan settings for comparing submission content to other published work and AI usage.  Review the pre-settings and make adjustments as you see fit.  The scan settings will open in a new window and divided between two major elements, "New Assignment Settings" and Scan Settings.

  1. The options under "New Assignment" Settings apply to what students see in their report and includes the option for instructors to upload a template into Copyleaks.  Information on uploaded templates will be ignored for similarity comparison (such as instructor created questions).   
  2. Under Scan Settings you can turn on/off specific settings to check for plagiarism. 
    1. Sources: choose what students' assignments are compared against. Here you can turn off the internal database which compares students' work to work already in the Copyleaks database. 
    2. Filters: adjust how sensitive you want the similarity level to be.
    3. Cross Language: check submissions against other languages
    4. Security Measures: hide sensitive student information and has an option to turn on a Character Manipulation checker which looks for certain items that aren't meant to trick an AI detection software.
  3. The Omit tab allows you to exclude titles, quotes, references, etc. from your scan results.
  4. If enabled, AI Content Detection will let you adjust the level of sensitivity for AI usage. 
The pre-setting for AI Content Detection is Level Two: detecting AI created content with minor changes by the student.


View Individual Student Results

Once a student has submitted an assignment, it can take a few minutes to process a report.

  1. To check individual results, return to the assignment and click SpeedGrader.
  2. If the item has been scanned, you will have a colored-coded percentage box to click and open the similarity report. The report opens in a new window. 
  3. From the report page, you will see the suspected matches highlighted in an orange color. Under the AI tab, you'll see suspected AI content highlighted in purple. 
  4. A column on the right side of the window has links to the websites or repository documents that Copyleaks thinks the assignment matches. You can click on the links to see the original text and decide whether the match is legitimate. 
  5. You can also filter results by clicking on the upside-down striped triangle above the results links.
  6. You can export the report as a PDF


View Whole Class Analytics

  1. Open the assignment
  2. Select Edit to access the Plagiarism Review settings
  3. Click on View Analytics
  4. This will open another window with whole class data.


Keep in Mind

  • Copyleaks assignments are denoted with a color-coded square next to the assignment grade.
  • The percentage provided through the SpeedGrader refers to the matched text percentage, not the AI content percentage.  You must open the full report to view both percentages as they may not be the same. 
  • The percentages are not always accurate.
