TABLE OF CONTENTS

Introduction

For hybrid, flexible, and online courses, you are required to report when students have completed an entry quiz by the census date.  If a student has not completed the entry quiz by the census date, that student will be dropped from the course.

We require that you use a Moodle Quiz rather than an assignment or discussion forum.  This helps create consistency between courses and for your students.  Additionally, Moodle quizzes have several features showing a student has attended online while still providing you with flexibility for how you decide what to ask and how to grade the activity.

Entry Quiz Settings

Timing

Confirm your census date.  You can locate the census date for your course through StormTrac by opening the Faculty tab and viewing your current semester courses. There will be a column for the census date for each active course.

You can also verify your census date through the shared spreadsheet that gets sent via email at the beginning of each semester.

If you decide to close your entry quiz earlier than the census date, you may need to implement a user override for a student to complete the quiz to remain in the course.  Quiz: Reset Attempt or Override Accommodations (Instructor)

Auto submissions

The default submission setting for Moodle quizzes is to have incomplete quizzes submitted automatically once the deadline has passed.  We recommend keeping this setting in place.  This will ensure that an attempt made will be recorded with a timestamp that aligns with the census date.  You will still be able to use this attempt to confirm that the student is active in the course.

How to edit the due date for future semesters

You must have an Entry Quiz for every course you teach that has an online component.  If you copy a course over to a new semester, keep in mind that census dates shift and so therefore you will need to edit your due date for the Entry Quiz.  Moodle has a useful tool to help edit due dates for your assignments in bulk.  You can learn more how to do this by reading the Date Report: Bulk Edit Due Dates, or you can simply edit your due dates manually by going to the timing section of your Entry Quiz settings.

Grading the Entry Quiz

How you decide to grade your Entry Quiz is up to you.

Some instructors will not allow students to access the rest of the course until the Entry Quiz is completed.  If you would like to know how to set this up, you can read the Restrict Access article. You can also decide if this restriction requires students to achieve a specific grade on the Entry Quiz.

No grade

Gradebook setup with Weighted Mean of Grades

If your gradebook is set up for Weighted Mean of Grades (or categories with different weights), with simple weighted mean of grades within those categories, you will want to keep your quiz outside of a category with a weight of zero.

Gradebook setup with Simple Weighted Mean of Grades

If you are unable to place the Entry Quiz outside of a category, you can manually exclude the grade by going into the individual assignment in Single View and check the Exclude box next to each student.

Hiding an item in the gradebook setup or grader report does not remove it from the student's grade aggregation, meaning the Entry Quiz will still impact the student’s overall course grade.

Graded activity

If you would like to grade your Entry Quiz, you can assign this by going to the quiz settings and the Grade section. From the Grade section, you can denote which grade category you would like to place your quiz.  If you do not set this up through the quiz page directly, you can also do this from the gradebook setup page.  Take a look at the Gradebook Setup Page Updates to view how to move individual assignments into categories.

Extra credit

If you would rather assign your Entry quiz as extra credit, take a look at this Extra Credit article.  If this is the route you decide, please note that you need to first create the Entry Quiz assignment to appear in the gradebook before you are able to assign it as extra credit.
