TABLE OF CONTENTS

With the most recent 4.4.4 Moodle update, the gradebook setup page has some new features--including being able to make all of these changes regardless if you’re in edit mode or not!

If you would like to first know more about Gradebook setup in general, including how to use Weighted Mean of Grades or Simple Weighted Mean of Grades, please read the Gradebook Setup Article first.

Adding Categories and Manually Created Assignments

There are no longer buttons for Add grade itemAdd category, or Add outcome item.

From the gradebook setup page, on the right hand side, you can select the dropdown arrow to add grade item or add category.

Collapsible Categories

The setup page now allows you to open and close categories to hide or show the individual assignments within specific categories.  Closing categories is helpful in a couple of ways.  First, this can help you to easily adjust and see the weights of your categories, eliminating the need to scroll.  Secondly, you are able to see if all of your individual assignments are placed in a category.  The image below shows many of the gradebook setup features, using Weighted Mean of Grades, including:

  1. An individual grade item not in a category that is weighted as zero and does not affect the overall grade

  2. Collapsed grade categories examples

  3. An opened grade category example with individual assignments for that category shown

  4. The weights column for the categories, for a course total of 100

Keep in mind that collapsing or hiding a category or item in the gradebook setup (or grader report page) does not remove it from the student's grade aggregation.

Moving Assignments into Categories

If you see that the individual assignment is not in a category or in an incorrect category, you can click on the empty box next to the item (step one), and then select the word Move that now appears at the bottom of the footer (step two).

A popup will appear to prompt you to select which category that individual item belongs to (step one).  Then, select Move (step two).

Moving Multiple Assignments at One Time

If you have multiple assignments that need to be moved into the same category, simply check the box next to all of the items that need to be moved (step one) before clicking the move button located in the footer (step two).  This is especially helpful if you have created your assignments or grade items before creating your categories in the initial gradebook setup.

Moving Items Within and Out of Categories

If you want to move an individual item within the same category or in a new category, click on the up and down arrow next to the item.

The up and down arrows next to individual assignments is highlighted

Your page will now reload to prompt you to select where this item should be placed.  You will also see the word move in parenthesis next to the item you are moving.  Hover your cursor over the dash line that represents the location you would like the item to appear.  The line will highlight for you to select the location, and then click the save changes button.

Census Quiz is marked as (move) and the dash line above the assignment is highlighted

Note: if you are moving an item into a new category, make sure your category is opened rather than collapsed.  Otherwise, the item will be placed outside the category it is intended to be placed.  This could impact the weight on the individual assignment and how it calculates a student’s grade. The image below shows an example of an individual grade item that is not in a category, but does have a weight.

An individual assignment with a weight is highlighted in red to identify that it is not in a category where it should be
