Introduction

One way to incorporate an extra credit assignment to give students a boost in a grade, is to identify an assignment as extra credit through the Moodle gradebook setup page.  Before you create an extra credit assignment, though, keep a few things in mind:

  • You will need to make sure you're adding the extra credit assignment to a grade category that uses simple weighted mean of grades
  • Creating an extra assignment this way could give students a boost in grade that goes above 100% in that grade category or potentially the course.
  • This might be the way to go when you want to ensure every student has an opportunity to earn "extra credit," even the students who already have a 100% in a grade category.

Step 1: Create the Extra Credit Assignment

  • If you have created the assignment as a Moodle assignment or quiz, for example, this will automatically appear in your gradebook.
  • If you are manually creating an extra credit assignment (a link to a survey for example), you will need to add the grade item following the steps outlined in the Manually Adding Graded Items into the Gradebook article and save changes.  This must be completed you will see specific features described in step three.

Step 2: Select "edit settings" for the specific assignment you want to identify as extra credit

  • From your gradebook setup page, find the assignment you have already created and want to denote as extra credit.  Select the "edit" button" to "edit settings" for this assignment.

Step 3: Check the box for "Extra Credit"

  • For the grade settings, you will see "Grade item" and "Parent category."  In the "Parent category" section, check the box for extra credit (step one).  Then, click on the blue box to "save changes" (step two).

NOTE: You will NOT see this box in the "Parent category" when you first create the assignment in the popup window.

Parent category is circled and the box for extra credit is checked and labeled as step one. The blue "save changes" button is labeled as step two

You will see confirmation that your extra credit assignment is complete when you go back into your gradebook setup and see a (+) symbol next to the max grade for the assignment.

The gradebook setup page is shown with the specific extra credit assignment max grade highlighted to show the max grade is 100.00+.

If you have also set this grade category set up to "drop the lowest" grade, the extra credit feature will not work.
