TABLE OF CONTENTS

Introduction

For hybrid, flexible, and online courses, you are required to report when students have completed a Course Entry Quiz by the census date.  If a student has not completed the course entry quiz by the census date, that student will be dropped from the course.

We require that you use a Canvas Quiz titled "Course Entry Quiz" rather than an assignment or discussion forum.  This helps create consistency between courses and for your students.  Additionally, Canvas quizzes have several features showing a student has attended online while still providing you with flexibility for how you decide what to ask and how to grade the activity.

Entry Quiz Settings

Timing

Confirm your census date.  You can locate the census date for your course through StormTrac by opening the Faculty tab and viewing your current semester courses. There will be a column for the census date for each active course.

You can also verify your census date through the shared spreadsheet that gets sent via email at the beginning of each semester.

If you decide to close your entry quiz earlier than the census date, you may need to implement a user override for a student to complete the quiz to remain in the course.  Only do this if the census date has not passed.  Quiz: Reset Attempt or Override Accommodations

Auto submissions

The default submission setting for Canvas quizzes is to have incomplete quizzes submitted automatically once the deadline has passed.  This will ensure that an attempt made will be recorded with a timestamp that aligns with the census date.  You will still be able to use this attempt to confirm that the student is active in the course.

How to edit the due date for future semesters

You must have a Course Entry Quiz for every course you teach that has an online component.  If you copy a course over to a new semester, keep in mind that census dates shift and so therefore you will need to edit your due date for the Entry Quiz. Canvas has a useful tool to help edit due dates for your assignments in bulk.  You can learn more how to do this by reading the Date Report: Bulk Edit Due Dates, or you can simply edit your due dates manually by going to the timing section of your Course Entry Quiz settings.

Grading the Course Entry Quiz

How you decide to grade your Course Entry Quiz is up to you.

Some instructors will not allow students to access the rest of the course until the Course Entry Quiz is completed.  If you would like to know how to set this up, you can read the Restrict Access article. You can also decide if this restriction requires students to achieve a specific grade on the Course Entry Quiz.

No grade

If you would not like to grade your Entry quiz, you may do so through the Details section of your quiz setup.  Simply check the box that sates "Do not count this assignment towards the final grade."  You can go a step further and check the box marked "Do not display in gradebook or the student's grade page."  However, this is optional.

Hiding an item from the Grades Index tab does not remove it from the student's grade aggregation, meaning the Course Entry Quiz will still impact the student’s overall course grade.  If you have marked the quiz as invisible, the overall grade you see will be different from the overall grade the student sees.

Graded activity

If you would like to grade your Course Entry Quiz, you can assign this by going to the quiz details settings.  From there, you can denote which assignment group you would like to place your quiz.  If you do not set this up through the quiz page directly, you can also do this from the Assignments tab in the navigation menu.  Take a look at the Canvas Gradebook Setup Page Article to view how to move individual assignments into groups.

Extra credit

If you would rather assign your Entry quiz as extra credit, take a look at this Extra Credit article.  If this is the route you decide, please note that you need to first create the Entry Quiz assignment to appear in the gradebook before you are able to assign it as extra credit.
