Introduction

This reference guide covers how to create a quiz and a brief explanation of different quiz settings.  Feel free to reference this guide when creating your quiz and deciding which features and behaviors of the quiz best meets your goals for the course and the individual assignment.

Creating a Quiz in Moodle

Make sure you are in edit mode

On your course page, locate where you would like to place your quiz and click either the plus (+) symbol or the add an activity or resource button

A box labled as select either the plus (+) symbol or add an activity or resource. Two arrows coming from the box show the location of the plus symbol and the location of the add activity or resource button. Both are located on the Moodle course page.

Locate the quiz icon listed under activities and add quiz.  Required settings will have you name the quiz before you can save and return to your Moodle course.

If you know you will use quizzes frequently in your course, go ahead and start quizzes to appear on your Starred tab for quick access. Learn more about how to do this by reading Customizing your Add Activity or Resource Page (opens in a new tab).

Additional Quiz Settings

Timing

Open and Close the Quiz

You can set a time for when you would like the quiz to open and close.  You must first check the Enable box; otherwise, the quiz will be and stay open by default.

Determining an open and/or close date can help with scaffolding assignments and managing the pace in which students complete their assignments.

Time Limits

Check the box Enable and then denote the amount of time a student is allowed to take the quiz from the time the student starts the quiz.  If you have a student with an accommodation that allows for a time extension, see the Additional Features section of this reference guide for how to add a user override.

This may be a feature you wish to use if you would like to decrease the chances of cheating, elevating the stakes of the quiz, or decreasing the chances of a student starting the quiz and then leaving it open, incomplete, and losing the work once they are timed out of Moodle.

When Time Expires

When the time limit is up and/or the quiz has closed by the end date, you can decide how the quiz should behave:

Expiration SettingBehavior
Open attempts are submitted automatically (default)

Whatever is completed by the deadline is recorded and automatically updated in the gradebook.  Unanswered questions are marked as incorrect

There is a grace period when open attempts can be submitted, but no more questions answered

student can submit rather than Moodle automatically submitting the quiz

Attempts must be submitted before time expires, or they are not countedthe student must select submit before the quiz closes, or they will receive a zero

Grade

Grade Category

If you are using weighted mean of grades, or categories for your course, you can select which category your quiz belongs to.  If you forget to place your quiz in a category, you can always set this setting through the quiz settings later or move the quiz manually through the Gradebook Setup Page.

Not sure how to move graded items in the gradebook? Check out the Gradebook Setup Page Updates article (opens in a new tab).

Grade to Pass

Passed attempts will show in the gradebook report page as green and failed attempts will show as red.  If you have completion settings in place where a minimum score matters, you will want to make sure this is reflected in your grade to pass setting.

Attempts allowed

Unlimited: students have as many times as possible before the quiz closes to take the quiz

One attempt: students only have one attempt to complete the quiz

More than one attempt, but not unlimited: a new section will open for you to decide if the quiz score will show highest attempt made, the first attempt made, the last attempt made, or if the overall quiz score will be an average of all attempts made

If you would like students to only have one attempt for the quiz, but multiple tries for automatically graded questions, you can set this up in the Layout section.

Layout

Decide how you want your questions to be displayed.  You may wish for questions to display one at a time or all at once.  You can edit this layout later with your individual questions.

Question Behavior

Shuffle questions (default): The order of your questions will shuffle if students have more than one attempt for a question.  You can shuffle individual answer choices if you enable this for individual questions.

Deferred feedback (default): any feedback (including correct and incorrect responses) will appear after the student submits the quiz.  You can set up more advanced feedback settings in the Review Options.  If you would like students to see the correct answer immediately after answering a question, or provide students with additional attempts at a question, before submitting the quiz, you can do this here.

There are many options for question behavior and feedback. To determine which method will be best for the purpose of your quiz, take a look at Moodle's article on Question Behaviors (opens in a new tab).

Review Options

Decide what you want students to be able to see during the attempt, immediately after the attempt, late while the quiz is still open, and later when the quiz has closed.  Make sure the box next to The attempt is checked if you would like to enable additional review options for immediately after the attempt and later while the quiz is still open.

Review options for quiz settings is opened. The items "The attempt" located underneath Immediately after the attempt and Later, while the quiz is still open are highlighted.

Restrict Access

If you want to scaffold the quiz and restrict when a student is able to complete the quiz, you can add a restriction.  For example, you could require that a student complete another activity or assignment first before they can access the quiz.

add restriction menu popup

Completion Conditions

The default completion conditions setting is for Moodle to mark the activity as complete once one attempt is made.

If you wish for students to track their progress in the course, you can have students mark when the quiz is complete or continue to have Moodle mark the conditions as met based on conditions you have set in this section.

You can reiterate here that students must receive a grade, or a passing grade, before the quiz is marked complete.

Set reminder in Timeline: if you check the Enable box for this feature, students will see the reminder for the quiz in their Dashboard when the log into Moodle.  It is recommended that you set the reminder to appear before the quiz due date to give students time to complete the quiz.

completion conditions for quiz settings is open. In this example, add requirements is selected with one minimum attempt required

Once you have completed the minimum requirements and any additional quiz settings you wish to complete, click save and display.  You will see a message stating no questions have been added yet.
