Adding Questions to a Quiz: I am having issues adding more than 20 questions from the question bank? (Added 11/2024)
This issue is happening when adding questions from the question bank to a quiz. If you have to filter questions in a category that contains more than 20 questions and you navigate to the next page of questions, it is causing an issue in Moodle and will not reliably add all your questions. Instead use this work around to show all questions on one page, rather than 20 at a time, to fix this issue. This is a workaround, the issue has been reported to Moodle, see their progress on fixing this bug at MDL-82783
- In the Questions category see how many questions are in the category you want to pull from
- Click on the quiz that you want to add questions to
- Select Add question and from Question Bank
- After locating the category you need, take note of how many questions that category contains (plus any sub-categories if you want these in you filtered options).
- In the URL bar at the top of web browser add this text to the end of the URL that is already there - &qperpage=xxx - replacing the xxx with the number of questions in the category and then press enter on your keyboard.
- Then click Add > from question bank like normal
- Locate the category you need and click Apply filters
- You should now see all the questions in that category on one page. Select all the questions you need and click Add
Surprise Extra Credit: My gradebook is not calculating correctly, student grades seem rather high.
Fall 2024 some instructors started experiencing a glitch in the gradebook that adds extra credit to items. This glitch happens when:
The overall gradebook is ‘Weighted mean of grades’
Your category within is set to ‘Simple weighted mean of grades’
Then you click "Edit grade item" from the Grader report or Gradebook setup page
How do I know if I am affected?
The easiest way to identify the issue is by noticing inflated student grades that are much higher than they should be. However if you are unsure, you can check by clicking ‘Grades’ in your course. Then click the dropdown menu near the top left of your gradebook to switch to ‘Gradebook Setup’ view. If you see a + symbol listed beside any of your grade items that you do not intend to be extra credit, you have been affected by this issue. The symbol looks like the picture below.
How do I fix it?
To fix the issue:
Use the steps above to identify assignments that are inaccurately marked as extra credit.
With ‘Edit mode’ on, click the three dots on the right side of the grade item and choose ‘Edit grade item’ while viewing it on the Grader Report or the Gradebook Setup page.
In the pop up window click ‘Show More’ (this step is important!)
Then on the next page scroll down and click the checkbox for ‘Extra Credit’ to unselect the option.
Click ‘Save changes’
Your grades will recalculate automatically and you can click ‘Continue’ to return to the Grader Report or Gradebook Setup page.
I can't add a new forum to my course. It won't save.
Check your Completion Tracking settings for the forum you are creating. If you have selected “student receives a grade”, make sure the grade type matches the other grade settings you have enabled. For example if you have not enable “Whole forum grading” or “Ratings”, an error occurs and will not let you save the Forum activity.
