Introduction

A reminder in Moodle is an additional notification you can trigger for specific assignments or activities.  Reminders will appear on a student's calendar and their dashboard.  When a student logs into Moodle, they will see the reminder appear for the specific class with the upcoming assignments.

How to Set up Reminders

You can set up reminders quickly using the Reports page in your Moodle Course

  1. Select Reports in your Administration Menu
  2. Select Dates
  3. You can narrow down what you want to setup with a reminder for assignments, activities, forums, URLs, text and media areas, H5P, journals, pages, or quizzes
  4. Navigate through your drop-down sections to locate the assignments and activities for which you would like to set a reminder
  5. Check the box for "set reminder in Timeline" and enter your date and time.

Setting up Reminders Individual Assignments

If you want to set up a reminder for assignments as you build them:

  1. Make sure you are in the settings tab for the assignment
  2. Scroll to Completion Conditions
  3. Select "Add Requirements" and add the necessary requirements you want students to complete
  4. Check the box for "set reminder in Timeline" and enter your date and time.

We also have an article on Completion Tracking for Discussion Forums that also covers reminders as a way to remind a student to submit an initial post before the forum deadline.

Tips:

  • It is recommended that you set your reminder before the due date.
  • Reminders can be especially useful for journal entries since you are unable to set due dates for journal entries
  • Depending on the activity type, your dates page may look slightly different.  For example, there is no due date available for journal entries, only the reminder.  For discussion forums, the reminder appears third, after the due date and cut-off date.
  • If you set up your reminder through the dates page, you do not need to first add completion conditions.

Reminders: Student View

As stated in the introductions, students will be able to view reminders in their calendar and on their dashboard.  Sometimes, it helps to see what the students' see!

View from Calendar

A reminder will be worded as "should be completed."  On the date an assignment/activity is due, the wording will say "is due."
