Copyleaks is a platform that helps detect possible plagiarism and AI usage by students. It is fully integrated with Moodle and can be used with assignments, forums, and quizzes. You can watch the video below or read the text instructions to learn how to use Copyleaks.

Add Copyleaks to an assignment

  1. When you add an assignment, forum, or quiz to Moodle and want to add Copyleaks, on the settings page, scroll down until you find "Copyleaks settings".
  2. Check the box to "Enable Copyleaks".
  3. Choose when you want the reports to generate: immediately when the student turns in work or on the due date.
  4. Choose whether you want students to be able to access the reports.
  5. Use the link for "Edit scan settings" to adjust your results options.
  6. Set up the rest of your assignment options and save.

Adjust the scan settings

  1. On the settings page of the assignment, find "Copyleaks settings".
  2. Click on the link for "Edit scan settings" to open another window where you can adjust your options.
  3. The options under General Settings apply to what students see in their report.
  4. Under Scan Settings you can turn off AI content detection using a toggle switch if you only want it to check for plagiarism. Remember that AI content detection is still new and can give a false positive.
  5. You can use the tab for Sources to choose what students' assignments are compared against. Here you can turn off the internal database which compares students' work to work already in the Copyleaks database.
  6. The Filters tab allows you to adjust how sensitive you want the accuracy to be.
  7. The Security Measures tab allows you to hide sensitive student information and has an option to turn on a Character Manipulation checker which looks for certain items that aren't meant to trick an AI detection software.
  8. The Omit tab allows you to exclude titles, quotes, references, etc. from your scan results.

View individual student results

  1. To check individual results, return to the assignment and click "Grade".
  2. If the item has been scanned, you will have the option to download the results as a PDF, open them in a new window, or copy the link to the results.
  3. If you open them in a new window, you will see the suspected matches highlighted in an orange color. Under the AI tab, you'll see suspected AI content highlighted in purple.
  4. A column on the right side of the window has links to the websites or repository documents that Copyleaks thinks the assignment matches. You can click on the links to see the original text and decide whether the match is legitimate.
  5. You can also filter results by clicking on the upside down striped triangle above the results links.

View whole class analytics

  1. Return to the settings page for the assignment.
  2. Scroll back down to "Copyleaks settings".
  3. Click on View Analytics.
  4. This will open another window with whole class data.
