Student Quickstart Guide

SmarterProctoring

Virtual proctoring is a service that students can use to take their exam remotely/online.

Types of Proctoring that may be available for your class:

  • Automated Proctoring (online) - is an automated software service that records the student's screen and webcam during an exam session. With Automated Proctoring you can test now (if your test is available), rather than scheduling a session with a live proctor. Your teacher can then review your test recordings. SmarterProctoring may automatically flags moments in the video for your instructor to review if it detect potentially suspicious behavior.
  • Virtual Testing Center (online)- Schedule a time (directions below) to test with Davidson Davie staff. A Learning Commons proctor will watch a student live via webcam when using the Hybrid Virtual Testing Center option. Proctors can see both the student and their screen during the exam session.
  • Testing Center (in-person) - If you are having technology issue or need to test on campus for other reasons you can schedule a time to visit campus to test in-person.

Scheduling a Session

If you will be testing with a live test proctor, you may need to schedule your testing session. If your instructor has required this, follow these steps.

  1. Locate your test in Moodle.

  2. If you have multiple choices for proctoring your exam, you will have to click on Choose a proctor. If Automated Proctoring is your only proctoring choice, you will see a button that says Start exam.

  3. There will be a button that says “Let's Schedule Your Session” click on it.

  4. It will take you to the scheduling page where you can select a date that works for you.

  5. It will populate the appointment times for that date to select from.

  6. After you select the date and time you will be asked to confirm your session and continue.

  7. There will be a payment summary that should show $0.

  8. Click on “Schedule”

  9. You will get a confirmation screen and option to return to the dashboard.

Preparing in Advance for your Session

  1. Make sure that you are using Google Chrome before you start your exam and install the Chrome extension (opens in a new window) prior to test day. When you click to add the extension a new tab will open and once it installs you will close that tab to get back to the tab you were on. It might say “error has occurred”, if this happens close the tab and go back to Moodle and refresh the page to start again.

Opening your Test Session

If you get stuck while opening your test, return to your course in Moodle and try to launch it again.

  1. Put away any materials the instructor has not allowed you to have during the test.

  2. Have a photo ID if required.

  3. Locate your test in Moodle.

  4. The start session button will not be available until your scheduled time.

  5. It will say “Whoops!” and to “Get the SmarterProctoring extension”

  6. It will open another tab for you to add the extension to Chrome.

  7. Close all tabs once the download tab is complete.

  8. Go back to the test in Moodle.

  9. It will navigate to the “Using Online Proctoring” where you can watch a video.

  10. Click Continue and you will see “Exam Details”

  11. “Preparing for Your Exam” screen will appear and continue to “System Check”

  12. This step will automatically test your WiFi stability, webcam, microphone, and screen count.

  13. Only one computer screen/monitor should be used.

  14. Click continue to the “Registration Consent” where you will agree to both buttons before you can proceed.

  15. “Screen Sharing” is the next step. If it will not allow you to share your screen then it will ask you to uninstall the Chrome extension and reinstall it.
