Text

  • Sans Serif, Tahoma, and Verdana fonts are the easiest to read.

  • Black or blue text is easiest to see for most people.

  • Bold text to call attention to important information (instead of using red text).

  • Avoid underlining text unless the text is a clickable hyperlink.

  • Avoid italics unless necessary (book titles, scientific names)

List of Items

  • Use the Bulleted List or Numbered List feature in the editing toolbar.

Hyperlinks

  • All links should be descriptive links that tell the user where the link will take them. Do not make “click here” a hyperlink.

    • Good example: Visit the NC Zoo website.

Images with Text in the Body of an Email

  • Write out the important information of an image that contains text (e.g. flyer, postcard, infographic)

Photographs in the Body of an Email

  • Gmail allows users to include alt text for photos

    • After inserting the photo, click the photo to edit alt text

    • Provide a brief, objective description of the photo
